About the Day
What is National Voters' Day?
National Voters' Day (Rashtriya Matdata Diwas) is observed in India every year on 25 January โ the day the Election Commission of India (ECI) was established in 1950. The day was inaugurated in 2011 by the Government of India to mark the ECI's 61st Foundation Day, with the aim of encouraging more young citizens to enroll as voters and participate in elections.
"The ballot is stronger than the bullet."โ Abraham Lincoln
India is the world's largest democracy โ with over 96 crore (960 million) registered voters as of 2024. Every vote matters in shaping the direction of this vast, diverse nation. National Voters' Day reminds every eligible citizen that voting is not just a right โ it is a duty and a privilege that millions fought and died to secure.

Guardian of Democracy
The Election Commission of India
India's Independent Electoral Body
The Election Commission of India (ECI) is an autonomous constitutional authority responsible for administering electoral processes for the Parliament, state assemblies, and offices of the President and Vice President. Established on 25 January 1950 โ one day before India became a republic โ it has been described as the "guardian of Indian democracy." The ECI operates under Article 324 of the Constitution and is completely independent of government control.
T.N. Seshan โ The Man Who Transformed Indian Elections: T.N. Seshan, Chief Election Commissioner from 1990โ96, revolutionized Indian elections โ cracking down on booth capturing, voter intimidation, vote buying, and use of criminal muscle power. He introduced the Voter Photo Identity Card (EPIC) and transformed the ECI from a largely ceremonial body to a powerful institution that political parties feared. He is widely credited with cleaning up Indian elections.

Democracy by Numbers
India's Electoral Democracy โ Astonishing Facts
1
The 2024 General Election โ World's Largest Exercise in Democracy
India's 2024 Lok Sabha election saw over 96 crore registered voters, 10.5 lakh polling stations, 55 lakh Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), and 15 lakh security personnel deployed. Over 64 crore votes were cast โ more than the entire adult population of Europe.
2
Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) โ India's Innovation
India was among the first countries in the world to switch entirely to EVMs, replacing paper ballots. Voter-Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines now also provide a paper trail for each vote โ making elections both efficient and verifiable.
3
Voter ID Card (EPIC) โ Your Most Important ID
The Elector's Photo Identity Card (EPIC) is the primary identification for voting. It also serves as a valid identity proof for many other services. Every eligible citizen should have one โ apply at nvsp.in or through the Voter Helpline App.
4
Remote Voting for Migrant Workers (Upcoming)
The ECI is developing Remote Electronic Voting Machines (RVMs) to allow migrant workers to vote from their current location for their home constituency โ addressing one of the most significant barriers to voter participation in India.

Your Rights
Every Indian Voter's Rights & Responsibilities
โ
Right to Vote
Every Indian citizen aged 18+ has the constitutional right to vote (Article 326). No one can be denied this right on the basis of religion, race, caste, sex, education, or economic status.
๐Right to Secret Ballot
Your vote is completely secret. No one โ not your employer, not your family, not any political party โ has the right to know how you voted. The secret ballot is fundamental to free elections.
๐Right to Register
Every eligible citizen has the right to register as a voter. You can register online at nvsp.in, through the Voter Helpline App, or at your nearest Electoral Registration Officer's office.
๐Voter Helpline 1950
The Election Commission operates a 24x7 National Voter Helpline at 1950. Use it to check your voter registration status, find your polling booth, report election violations, or get information on candidates.
๐
How to Observe
Actions Every Citizen Should Take
๐ฑCheck Your Voter Registration
Visit nvsp.in or the Voter Helpline App and verify your voter registration is current and accurate. Check that your name, address, and photo are correct on the electoral roll.
๐ฅRegister 5 New Voters
Help 5 friends, family members, or colleagues who are 18+ and not yet registered as voters to enroll today. This is the most direct action you can take to strengthen Indian democracy.
๐ซSpread Awareness at Schools
Schools can organize mock elections, quiz competitions on electoral processes, or invite Electoral Registration Officers to speak to students approaching voting age. Civic education begins in school.
๐ณCommit to Always Voting
Take a personal pledge: "I will vote in every election โ local, state, and national โ for the rest of my life." Municipal and panchayat elections shape your daily life more directly than national ones. Vote in all of them.
๐
The Voter's Pledge
India's National Voters' Day Pledge
"We, the citizens of India, having abiding faith in democracy,
hereby pledge to uphold the democratic traditions of our country
and to the free, fair and peaceful elections.
We further pledge to cast our vote in every election
fearlessly and without being influenced by
caste, community, religion, language, or inducements
and to elect the right candidates."
The official National Voters' Day Pledge, administered across India every year on 25 January at schools, colleges, government offices, and public institutions.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on Democracy:
"Democracy is not merely a form of government. It is primarily a mode of associated living, of conjoint communicated experience. It is essentially an attitude of respect and reverence towards fellow men."
