The Legend of King Mahabali
Onam commemorates the mythical reign of King Mahabali, so righteous that even the gods grew uneasy. Vishnu, as Vamana, visited and asked for three paces of land. Impressed by Mahabali's devotion, Vishnu granted him permission to visit his people once yearly. Onam is that homecoming.
Pookalam: The Flower Carpets
Intricate circular designs made entirely from flower petals. Starting small on Atham (day one), the pookalam grows in complexity over ten days.
Onam Sadhya
Arguably India's most elaborate vegetarian meal — over 24 dishes served on a banana leaf, eaten sitting cross-legged using only the right hand. The finale is ada pradhaman, a jaggery-sweetened payasam.
