Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha — the elephant-headed son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati — on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha (August–September).
The Birth of Ganesha: While Lord Shiva was away, Parvati created a boy from turmeric paste, gave him life, and set him to guard her door while she bathed. When Shiva returned, Ganesha stopped him. Angered, Shiva severed Ganesha's head. Parvati was devastated. To console her, Shiva restored Ganesha with an elephant's head and blessed him as Ganadhyaksha — to be worshipped first before any deity.
Lokmanya Tilak's Public Festival: The modern tradition of public Ganesh Chaturthi was popularized by freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak in Pune in 1893 as a platform for uniting Indians against British rule. This tradition continues with magnificent Sarvajanik Ganesh mandals across Maharashtra.
Ganesha Writing the Mahabharata: The sage Vyasa dictated the entire Mahabharata to Ganesha, who wrote it without lifting his pen — when the pen broke, he broke off his own tusk to continue writing. This is why Ganesha is depicted with one broken tusk.
📚 Deity of Wisdom & Learning: Students, scholars, and artists pray to Ganesha for intellect, creativity, and clear thinking.
🤝 Symbol of Community Unity: The public celebrations foster communal harmony and togetherness across all backgrounds.
🌊 Visarjan — Cycle of Creation: The immersion on the 10th day represents the cycle of creation and dissolution — the Lord returning to the cosmos to be worshipped again next year.
- 1Day 1: Ganesh Sthapana (Idol Installation)Bring a clay Ganesh murti home. Perform Prana Pratishtha (consecration). Install on a decorated platform with flowers and lights. Perform the evening aarti.
