In the heart of Madurai rises one of India's most visually staggering temples. Its fourteen gopurams — towering gateways encrusted with over 33,000 painted stucco sculptures — dominate the city skyline.
A Temple for the Goddess
Unlike most temples where the male deity takes precedence, Meenakshi — "she with the fish-shaped eyes" — is the presiding deity, an avatar of Parvati. Her consort Sundareswarar (Shiva) occupies a separate shrine.
The Architecture
The complex sprawls across 14 acres. The Hall of Thousand Pillars features musical pillars that produce distinct notes when tapped. The Golden Lotus Tank is where devotees bathe before worship.
Daily Life
Over 15,000 people visit daily. The evening ceremony — when Sundareswarar is carried to Meenakshi's chamber for the night — is one of the most intimate rituals in Indian worship.

Open 5:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM. Entry free. Best time: October to March. The Chithirai Festival (April–May) draws over a million visitors.
