Varanasi — Kashi, the City of Light — is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, and at its spiritual nucleus stands the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, home to one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
History and Legend
The temple's origins are mentioned in texts dating back over three millennia. Lord Shiva himself established this Jyotirlinga at Kashi. The current structure was built in 1780 by Ahilyabai Holkar. Maharaja Ranjit Singh later donated 1,000 kg of gold for plating the spire.
The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor
The transformative Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor, inaugurated in 2021, connects the temple directly to the ghats with landscaped courtyards and a museum.
Darshan and Rituals
The temple opens before dawn for Mangala Aarti (around 3 AM). Devotees offer milk, Ganga water, and bilva leaves to the Shiva linga. During Maha Shivratri, the temple remains open through the night.
The Ghats of Varanasi
Dashashwamedh Ghat hosts the spectacular evening Ganga Aarti — a synchronized ceremony of fire, chanting, and conch shells. A sunrise boat ride reveals the city's full panorama.

Open daily approximately 2:30 AM to 11 PM. Photography prohibited inside. Valid government ID required. Best time: October to March.
